The longer we reject personal responsibility the longer the “ships” of our lives will sink along with the people who were trying to help us. We can all learn from Jonah’s maturity in owning his own responsibilities. He didn’t let others suffer nor did he blame others for what was clearly because of him. Some people, when they meet you like to blame you for the decisions of their life. We are only responsible for what we have done in the time we have known someone. This ship isn’t sinking because of the time these men had with Jonah, it’s sinking because of events before they ever met him. This is also true now in life. We can’t take on the responsibility of someone’s life choices for the last 20, 30, 40, 50, etc years when we have only known them for days, weeks, or months.
Jonah 1:12 NASB20
And he said to them, “Pick me up and hurl me into the sea. Then the sea will become calm for you, because I know that on account of me this great storm has come upon you.”
